People tend to be slightly politer when turning me down if they realise a project can be days or weeks worth of work - they're more likely to be honest and admit they can't afford it, rather than accusing me of being a rip-off. When I do commissioned artwork (miniature sculpture, mostly), I now make sure that the expected hours is very clearly stated in my initial quote. Many people just value the effort and experience that goes into art very unfairly, and with amateurs constantly undercutting the market (which has a feedback effect, lowering prices more), it is a frustratingly difficult career to pursue professionally.
